Astro Bot revels in showing the player something new around almost every corner. Few ideas are even revisited, making some moments feel memorable and unique. While it can border on not allowing some of those ideas to creatively breathe, given how quickly they can be cast aside in favor of something new, I never felt robbed of my time with any moment, or spectacle. Every stage in Astro Bot provides its own challenges, forcing players to think outside the box or make use of unique power-ups.

Not bad for a company that warned at the start of the year that it had no major exclusive games coming in 2024. The Astro Bot franchise first began back in 2013 with a collection of mini-games known as The Playroom on PlayStation 4. This collection served as a way to showcase the PlayStation Camera and DualShock 4 capabilities. Three years later, the idea would be expanded with The Playroom VR, which did the exact same thing for the PSVR. Players seemed to love it so much that it warranted a fully-fledged game, so Team Asobi did just that in 2018. There’s ample destruction as well – in the Japan-themed stage, for instance, a power-up involving a sponge is introduced.

Astro Bot doesn’t care about such baggage, but if it did you’d probably use your mechanical arms to throw it at a giant robotic ape before smashing in said ape’s teeth and propelling yourself into its soon-to-be exploded head. Astro Bot only cares about fun, and I genuinely can’t think of a single moment it made me wish something had been handled differently, tweaked to be easier, or expanded upon. Very tight of Sony on that as on my series x, as long as it is my home console all that log in get cloud saves through my subscription.

If nothing else, I hope that the creative joy that permeates Astro Bot’s every pixel inspires a new generation of game developers to make the kinds of games they want, without fear, limits, or compromise. A true audiovisual tour-de-force, Astro Bot makes full use of the PS5’s DualSense controller, utilizing it in ingenious, but also somehow obvious, ways to maximize enjoyment. And “enjoyment” is certainly an apt descriptor, as few modern games are capable of evoking the sense of childlike joy that Astro Bot excels at, regardless of player age. Strong and varied platforming mechanics are other building blocks of Astro’s gameplay, allowing for exhilarating and unexpected interactive opportunities. All of this is to say that Astro Bot’s four Game Awards victories, including the coveted Game of the Year Award, are more than deserved.

This mechanical focus allowed Team Asobi to perfect each move and then apply them all in a thousand different ways, and the result is a rewarding and robust platformer. If people want to “ruin their experience” as you say, then let them. @2huwman Some people are just like that, they can still enjoy the game but some might be completionists who want to get everything in the quickest time they can due to having many other games to play as well.

The Last of Us Part 2 was named game of the year 326 times to Hades’ 75. Still, Balatro developer LocalThunk can go home delighted with three awards, tying for second place behind Astro Bot. The feel of Astro Bot is both incredible and incredibly frustrating, but not for the reasons you think. Everything from running, jumping, bashing, and using Astro Bot’s boot thrusters to clear a gap feels incredible. The precise movements the little bot makes is fine-tuned to perfection. The controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers are showcased in ways that show the relationship that Team Asobi has with the Dual Sense design team.
